There aren't enough praise-worthy superlatives for
The Box. Brilliantly twisted, intriguingly mysterious, tensely unpredictable and mind-numbingly original are just a few terms that come to mind. It's a mix of a few different genres, and yet it never loses its momentum, and always manages to throw another surprise your way.
After Norma and Arthur Lewis are presented with a mysterious box by a menacing stranger, they have a choice to make: press the button and collect a million dollars, but in doing so, someone they don't know will die. With 24 hours to decide, this presents many moral questions, and where the movie goes from this point will keep you glued to the edge of your seat.
The plot is not the easiest to follow, but as long as you concentrate and take note of everything presented on screen, you'll find it to be an extremely satisfying mystery. The performances were all superb, especially a surprisingly effective Cameron Diaz as Norma Lewis. Rarely has she given a performance as good as this. And Frank Langella also deserves a mention as the disfigured Arlington Steward, who cuts a menacing yet gentlemanly character at the same time.
Finally putting the pieces together in this densely-layered movie puzzle is one of the greatest movie adventures experienced so far this year. The plot is exceptional and the result is magnificent. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Norma and Arthur Lewis, a suburban couple with a young child, receive a simple wooden box as a gift, which bears fatal and irrevocable consequences.
A mysterious stranger delivers the message that the box promises to bestow upon its owner $1 million with the press of a button. But, pressing the button will simultaneously cause the death of another human being somewhere in the world, someone they don't know.
With just 24 hours to have the box in their possession, Norma and Arthur find themselves in the cross-hairs of a startling moral dilemma and must face the true nature of their humanity.
