I enjoyed this book. It was easy reading and the story pulled me along to find out how it would end. This story is aimed at young adults from 11 years, so it's fairly simply written and there are lots of little hints along the way to lead you along. It's a typical "outsider at school who becomes the hero" type story.
Although the story follows the viewpoint of Ximena (the lead character), you don't really see behind the curtain to her emotions through the beginning of the book. As a teenager, I would have expected her to at least show some emotion in private, but there were only accidental and awkward glimpses that don't help you connect to the character. This didn't ruin the book but it wasn't the best that it could be. There are also numerous phrases in Spanish in the book without any translations. This is great for setting the scene but in South Africa we don't typically learn Spanish, so puzzling the phrases out took time.
For all of that, it was a good read.
