One natural death can be regarded as a misfortune. Two begins to
look like murder. A woman drowns unnoticed in the Thames. She was
an alcoholic, and the police barely look into her death, or her
life. A theatre-goer is found dead in his seat. This time the
police are interested, and Detective Caius Beauchamp and his team
set to work. Or they will, once they can identify the dead man, who
had no ID or personal belongings in his hotel room. As the case
points back towards a historic disappearance, Caius needs to pull
himself together: he's ate a whole carrot cake for lunch, and
hasn't brought in vegetable smoothies for his team in days. Then a
mysterious invitation arrives for Caius, complete with a tailored
suit he could never afford. It promises to lead him further into
the corrupt world of the rich and powerful - but it might also
allow him to understand the death of a woman who would otherwise be
forgotten. Is that a compromise he's prepared to make?
