Set in the year 2022, this landmark science-fiction masterpiece is a fitting tribute to Hollywood legend Edward G Robinson, who died a mere twelve days after the shooting of this one was completed. Yet Eddie G still shines in a cast headed by Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors and Joseph Cotten.
Our world is now overpopulated - and, for most part, starving. There are now forty million people living in New York alone, and food is in short supply. This often leads to food riots. Soylent Green is one of various processed rations turned out by the mighty Solent Corporation... and Sol Roth (Edward G Robinson) discovers the shocking secret of what it is made from! On his death, policeman Thorn (Charlton Heston) also stumbles across this secret while investigating the brutal death of wealthy businessman Simonson (Joseph Cotten); and the movie's only weak point is that it takes Thorn practically the full length of the movie to unearth what we, the audience, have fathomed up almost from the start!
But the story is a good one, and the scenes of a steamingly hot New York - the heat caused by the greenhouse effect - are most convincing if a tad depressing. Leigh Taylor-Young plays Shirl; a 21-yearold concubine who is somewhat euphemistically referred to as "the furniture".
First released on the Big Screen in 1973, this movie hasn't aged one bit!
Charlton Meston portrays Thorn, a detective prowling the dank streets of a polluted, overpopulated Big Rpple gone rotten in 2022.
Hhe's trailing a murderer - and the trail leads to a stunning discovery.
Vividly realised, Soylent Green's world gains its power not just from its special effects but from its heart - a human dimension magnified by the performance of legendary Edward G. Robinson in his moving screen farewell.
