Harsh Times (DVD)

Christian Bale, who played the title role in Batman Begins, proves here that he is a very fine actor – even when on the wrong side of the law! In this action film, he plays Jim Davis, a wannabe cop and former Army Ranger, who is quite literally fighting to come to terms with civilian life. He has a Mexican girlfriend whom he wishes to marry; but when his application to join the Los Angeles Police Department is mysteriously declined, his world seems to fall apart. He then spends his time with old friend Mike (Freddy Rodriguez) who is trying – though not unduly hard – to get a job to appease his live-in girlfriend, Sylvia (Eva Longoria.)
This going-nowhere existence leads Jim and Mike to an idle and violent life of crime…and loyal pal though he is, Mike becomes ever-increasingly more afraid of Jim, whose erratic mood swings repeatedly cause trouble for them both.
Director David Ayer has used a very light yellow filter in many of the scenes, which is most effective in conveying the subtle atmosphere of Los Angeles.
