This film gained notoriety before it's theatrical release due to the death of Heath Ledger earlier this year. And this just adds to the visceral impact of his coldy calculated performance as The Joker, a much more impressive and menacing performance than the one from Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's 1989 Batman.

This sequel to Batman Begins manages to be even more thrilling and action-packed, and has no sense of campness like most other superhero adventures. The story is a serious one, and told in a tantalizingly inviting manner, one that involves you in the character development and manages to make you care for our hero, because once you see the demented mannerisms of his arch-villian, you realize that this is no fairytale, and the good guy might not win.

The performances from an all-star cast are all superb, especially that of the late Heath Ledger, who conveys pure evil and nastiness with just one sneer, and has no need to display over-the-top histrionics as mentioned earlier by mr. Nicholson in the same role. (Rumours abound of a Oscar nomination for Ledger). With excellent support from Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart (as Harvey Dent), Christian Bale definitely has himself surrounded with some amazing actors.

Not just one of the best action movies of the year, The Dark Knight manages to be one of the best movies of the year. And as a side-note, it also managed to be the highest grossing theatrical release of the year, eventually ending up as the second highest money maker of all time, second only to Titanic. So do yourself a favour, and see this. Better yet, own it. It's the movie event of 2008. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime.

With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective, but soon find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante.

Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.
