From Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins that also starred Christian Bale: we have the intriguing story of the ever-ongoing “one-upmanship” illusion contest over the years, between two stage magicians in aristocrat Robert Angier (Hugh Jackman), and working class man Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) – the latter of whom seems to have more of an understanding for magic. Angier works under the stage name of “The Great Danton.”


Even as stage-created tricks, many so-called “illusions” are every bit as dangerous to do as they look, and Angier is not above lifting material from other world-renowned magicians; even stealing certain closely guarded secrets from Borden himself. But while knowing how to do a magic trick is one thing, actually performing it can require nerves of steel – and prove to be far more difficult than was originally envisaged!


Michael Caine is magnificent in the supporting role of Harry Cutter, Angier’s erstwhile stage engineer. Rebecca Hall is also very good as Sarah, Borden’s wife. But the most interesting role is that of real-life inventor Nikola Teslar (David Bowie), who creates a special device for Angier.


It’s all absolutely riveting stuff!

Rival magicians in turn-of-the-century London battle each other for trade secrets. The rivalry is so intense that it turns them into murderers. The title refers to the product of a successful trick.
