Yep, its G.S.O.E. - acknowledged today as being the granddaddy of all the subsequent "Soapies." Amongst its many honours, it won ten Oscars - a record at the time - including that for the Picture of the Year; and was nominated for many more. The principal stars are Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard, Olivia de Havilland, and Thomas Mitchell. Also in the cast are Hattie McDaniel as "Mammy." She received the "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar; the first time that a person of colour was honoured by the Academy (the second was Sidney Poitier - more than twenty years later!) The voice of an off-screen soldier who is reminiscing is provided by Cliff Edwards; better remembered as being the voice of Jiminy Cricket, in Disney's animated Pinnochio. Although Victor Fleming is listed as director, it is widely known that at least three other leading directors assisted at various stages of production.
And it's still a great movie today! The production standards are decades ahead of their time, and the Technicolor photography - using the old (and expensive!) three-camera system, has well-withstood the ravages of time. Apparently the Clark Gable role of Rhett Butler was also sought by Errol Flynn. Gary Cooper was also considered, but Coop pulled out of the race, as he didn't think that a film about the American Civil War had any box-office potential! As for the Scarlett O'Hara role: actresses including Jean Arthur, Lucelle Ball, Joan Bennett, Clara Bow, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, Greer Garson, Paulette Goddard, Susan Hayward, Katherine Hepburn, Carold Lombard, Merle Oberon, Norma Shearer, Barbara Stanwick and Lana Turner were all considered... before the producers finally settled on the hitherto-unknown English rose, Vivien Leigh, for the much sought-after part.
And just for the record: Margaret Mitchell - who wrote the book - had to knock on the doors of about thirty publishers before she found one who was prepared to take a chance on what has since been hailed as a masterpiece! And it still is - as is this movie!
Epic romantic drama based on Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer-winning
novel set during the American Civil War. Southern belle Scarlett
O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) often uses men to get what she wants, but is
unable to get the one man she truly desires, Ashley Wilkes (Leslie
Howard). She soon meets her match in the roguish Captain Rhett
Butler (Clark Gable) and in the war itself which destroys the
genteel way of life she has always known. With determination she
rebuilds her life from the shattered remains the Union Army leaves
behind. Despite its sometimes troubled production (director George
Cukor was replaced by Victor Fleming, with Sam Wood brought in when
Fleming's health failed), the film won ten Oscars, including Best
Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.
