A magical series! Children of all ages should read it. Xar, son of the King of Wizards, Encanzo, Wish, daughter of Sychorax, Queen of the Warriors and her bodyguard Bodkin, fled the clutches of Encanzo and Queen Sychorax on Wish’s magic door. Encanzo and Queen Sychorax were busy arguing over how to discipline their disobedient children when the three managed to take flight. We join them racing through the wildwoods searching for Caliburn’s sister. (I should explain- Caliburn is human - in a raven’s body). The three children are being followed on the ground by their friends and animals. Crusher the Giant, Xar’s snowcats, a werewolf, a bear and wolves. The sprites and hairy fairies were in their usual place, with Xar. Finding Caliburn’s sister is fraught with danger. Witches are flying above the children, and Queen Sychorax and her iron warrior troops are on the ground. Will the children find Caliburn’s sister before the queen can capture them? Will they complete their task and find all the ingredients for their quest – to kill the witches? That’s for you dear reader to find out. Cressida Cowell proved that she is a brilliant author with her How to Train a Dragon series of books. But she’s taken writing about magic, witches, droods, and ancient times to a whole new level in this series of The Wizards of Once. The main protagonists are an extraordinary bunch of children, Wish with her magic eye, Xar with his cheek and ability to break every rule in the book, Bodkin – a boy who is willing to face danger because he’s supposed to be a bodyguard and of course Caliburn. Xar’s poor mentor who must ensure that he Xar stays safe so that, as the son of the King of the Wizards, he can fulfil his potential. I think, as a grown-up child, these books give me far more excitement and joy than any thriller. I’m sure my blood pressure rises as I race through the adventures following Wish, Xar and Bodkin as they try to destroy the King Witch’s plans for the destruction of peace on earth. Unfortunately, reaching the end of the book only leaves more questions. Who is the narrator? Will the children succeed in their quest? Hopefully, my questions find some answers when Cressida Cowell cracks the code for the next book. Treebeard Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review.
