December Boys (DVD)

Almost a SIX-STAR picture!

At first I had feared comparing this with the gutless though (strangely enough) still very popular Summer of ’42 of the early 1970s. I needn’t have worried though. Although they do overlap in one area, this is a far, far better made movie, and with a totally different story from the Richard Mulligan production.

Yes, this is still a coming-of-age tale for the five main characters, and how their lives are changed over one holiday. The movie is set in 1960s Australia. Four orphan boys from a Roman Catholic orphanage are on a summer holiday at the beach. They compete for adoption by a couple in the beachside settlement.

A South African equivalent of Kangaroo Island, where the picture was lensed, would have to be a kind of cross between Arniston, and a slightly more accessible equivalent to Smitswinkel Bay near Cape Point. In other words: paradise – particularly to five youngsters from the dry Australian Outback. There’s a large, uncaught fish “out there” in the bay somewhere…and also a dark-coloured horse that patrols the shoreline and is reputed to catch fish to feed a family of wild cats!

Drama based on the novel by Michael Noonan. They share the same birth month, so the orphanage calls them December Boys. But these teens Maps (Daniel Radcliffe), Spit (James Fraser), Sparks (Christian Byers) and Misty (Lee Cormie) have much more in common. With no hopes of ever joining a family, they form their own familial bonds. Then the unexpected news comes that a young couple may adopt one of them, and the long-time pals suddenly share something else - a rivalry to be the chosen one.
