“The Penguin” meets “Ferris Bueller”! You’ll probably wind up by buying this delightful Christmassy DVD – even though the first half of it will possibly irritate you as much as it did me!
Slightly old-fashioned Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) lives in a quiet neighbourhood with his supportive wife Kelly (Kirstin Davis); their dawky teenage daughter Madison (Alia Shawkat); and their son, Carter (Dylan Blue)…who is obviously about to enter the Golden Age of puberty! Enter the New Neighbour from Hell in the form of Buddy Hall (Danny DeVito)! Despite his neighbourly young wife Tia (Kirstin Davis), and their two mini-skirted 9-foot daughters Ashley and Emily (Sabrina and Kelly Aldridge) – whose presence is certainly not lost on Carter – Buddy proves to be a pushy, dislikeable little car salesman who cannot settle down anywhere. His life’s ambition is to create a Christmas light display that will make his home visible from space!
Much of the screen time runs very much like a Jack Lemon & Walter Matthau comedy at its worst…but after the power has fused on Buddy’s ultimate light display: the townspeople arrive to illuminate the place with their cellphones – and Tia leads them in the singing of “O Holy Night”…
Family comedy starring Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick. For
Cloverdale, Massachusetts optometrist Steve Finch (Broderick), no
time of the year can compare to the glory of the Christmas season.
And, for many years now, he's carried on a series of heartfelt but
hokey Yuletide traditions that his family - wife Kelly (Kristin
Davis), daughter Madison (Alia Shawkat), and son Carter (Dylan
Blue) - at this point, can barely tolerate. Despite his family's
exhausted protests, super-organised Steve has the December calendar
chock full with everything from shooting the Finch's annual
Christmas card photo, to their ritual tree harvesting and
neighbourhood caroling night. There's also scheduled time for
shopping, 'personal reflection,' and the town's yearly Winterfest
carnival, which Steve joyously oversees. But Steve's Christmas
bliss is suddenly destroyed when slippery car salesman Buddy Hall
(DeVito) moves in next door and Steve finds himself going
toe-to-toe with his new neighbour. Buddy quickly begins to
undermine Steve's dominance as the local 'King of Christmas' when
he sets out to festoon his new house with enough glowing holiday
lights so it will be visible from outer space.
