Dale Abbot is unprepared for the sudden consequences of his long
and lonely deep space mission. For over two hundred and forty-six
years, Dale Abbot has succumbed to the depressing routine of life
aboard the UFS Perseus, following mission protocol and sinking into
a numbness of regret and reminiscence. And then it happens. The
power to the deep space exploration ship he is employed upon goes
out: no air, no lights, the hibernating crew endangered by the
sudden lack of electricity. In the cold darkness, as Dale scrambles
for a way to survive, he hears a voice. A soft woman's voice. "Can
you help me," she asks, "I think I'm lost." Now, what is Dale to do
when confronted by a suddenly self-aware computer that, if given
time, could become something beyond the scope of any human mind?
Before he can worry about that however, he must somehow get the
power on before he dies a silent and lonely death. Marvelous Things
is a philosophical cat and mouse game, a psychological litmus test,
and a dire interstellar emergency as one man struggles to
understand and survive the birth of a new form of consciousness.
