Widower Thomas P. Greene has to leave his daughters, fourteen
year-old Fancy and four year-old Danni when he is called into the
service of the Confederacy at the beginning of the war. He knows
Fancy is a responsible kid, and he's taught her everything he could
about how to run their family farm-planting, nurturing, harvesting.
He hates to leave her with all that responsibility, but he has no
choice. Only a few months into the war, he is captured by Yankee
soldiers at Antietam. He is then taken to a prison camp at Fort
Delaware, where he spends the remainder of the war, poorly fed and
his wounds untreated. When the Yankees finally release him at the
war's end, he is penniless and still has untreated war injuries,
and he has to make his way back to Florence, Alabama on foot.
Finally reaching home a year after his release, he finds his girls
gone and his home and farm taken over by an unscrupulous neighbor
who tries to kill him. No one knows where his girls are. Follow the
adventures as Tom tries to rebuild his life and find his beloved
daughters.
