After having been extirpated to near extinction at the turn of the
century, northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) have
re-established breeding colonies on isolated beaches and offshore
islands along the California coast since the 1950's (Stewart et al.
1994). In 1981, the first northern elephant seal birth was recorded
at an isolated pocket beach at the Point Reyes National Seashore
(PORE; Allen et al. 1989).
