The Day After Tomorrow (DVD)

From Roland Emmerich, director of Independence Day comes another fine sci-fi epic: this time depicting the catastrophic effects of global warming. It correctly points out that the term “global warming” is ultimately going to lead straight to the next Ice Age!

From extensive research in Antarctica, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) determines that the large ice shelves breaking off both polar ice-caps are not only increasing the volume of water in the ocean; they are also drastically altering the delicate fresh-water-to-salt- water balance. His findings are pointedly ignored by those in authority. Not even US Vice President Becker (Kenneth Welsh) will heed his warnings. Meanwhile, drastic climatic changes are starting to be felt throughout the entire Northern Hemisphere. There is thick snow in New Delhi; hailstones the size of bricks bombard Tokyo; giant cyclones sweep right across America, while New York is about to be hit by unprecedented tidal waves! Needless to say, the special effects people have done a superb job in all departments.

Perry King, in a small role, gets his turn to play the President of the United States.

When global warming triggers the onset of a new Ice Age, tornadoes flatten Los Angeles, a tidal wave engulfs New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Now, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and a small band of survivors must ride out the growing superstorm to stay alive in the face of an enemy more powerful and relentless than any they've ever encountered: Mother Nature!
