The Pro tells the story of a young surfer, Tiaan Nothnagel that has to come to terms with the accidental death of his best friend, Dirkie Lawrence just before their last year at school.After Dirkie s death, Tiaan swears off surfing for good, as he can t stand to be reminded of everything that he and Dirkie shared. But then, Dirkie s twin sister (who went to live with their dad after their parents split up the previous year) arrives in town on a mission: to be selected to go on Wave-Seekers, a fictional World Surf Tour and something that Tiaan and Dirkie dreamt of doing. But for her to succeed, she needs Tiaan s help, and by implication, she needs him to get back on his surfboard.As Tiaan at first refuses to help her, she turns to one of his worst enemies, Dustin, for help and for some surf coaching. Dustin, however, only has one thing on his mind when it comes to girls and especially Yvette. Tiaan is also blinded to Yvette s predicament when he falls hopelessly in love with a Malayan girl, Jasmine.Tiaan s sessions with the school counsellor, Geyer, seems to help, but Geyer has some dark secrets of his own, struggling with alcoholism and his own recent divorce. Tiaan is furthermore haunted by nightmares and hunted by the vice-principal, Kruiwa for any and all reasons.After Yvette fails to get selected for Wave-Seekers, Tiaan;s world falls apart even further when he learns that Jasmine is going to a school dance with Dustin and that Geyer has tried to commit suicide.

Through Dustin's provocation Tiaan also almost gets expelled from school. All these things add up and eventually Tiaan cracks and cries about his friend for the first time in 9 months. Learning that Yvette is going to attempt to surf bigger waves on her own convinces him to help her become better at surfing, even just for surfing's sake. Via Dustin Tiaan finds out that Yvette can still join Wave-Seekers, but as he do not want her to go by herself or with Dustin, Tiaan withholds this information from her.

Tiaan's dad takes him to the rehab centre where Geyer is recovering and they reconcile. During their annual confirmation class camp, Tiaan is forced to face his fear of entering the water willingly and he tells Yvette about the Wave-Seekers opportunity and she confronts him about his own guilt.The next morning, after finding out Yvette left the camp terrain, Tiaan and Hermann chases her down, just as she is about to leave town to go back to staying with her dad. They convince her to go to the beach, but she agrees only on the condition that Tiaan surfs with her. He finally agrees.

At the beach, after Tiaan finally let go of his guilt, he squares off against Dustin and gets offered a spot on the Tour along with Yvette. At long last he embraces life again.
