This modern update of the 1978 B-grade classic manages to maintain the same dose of gory scares, nubile naughtiness, and silly humour. And it's quite a fun ride in the process, as long as you're aware that this was intentionally made not to be taken too seriously, and it's all about the thrills. And boy, what thrills they are.
It's Spring Break and masses of teens descend on a sleepy town situated on a lake, all in the name of partying and unwinding. But unbeknownst to them, a school of deadly piranha have found their way into the lake as well, and on the hottest day of the year with everyone heading into the water, you can be sure that the "tide is about to turn".
With modern technology, the computer-generated effects make the killer fish even more scary and lifelike. So while the amount of blood and decapitated body parts (not to mention the ample nudity) on screen will definitely not be to everyone's tastes, this is to be seen as more of a fun popcorn movie. It manages some not-too-bad performances from an able cast, and the final scene of the movie is a humdinger! All-told, it's a heck of a great ride. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun.
But this year, there's something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; a new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria.
After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the areas new razor-toothed residents.
