Daniel Godwin is determined to join the British Army to fight against the Nazi scourge. His impetuousness leads him to having a brief affair with the wife of a good friend and mentor who ran the local cadet force. She bears a child. Initially guilt ridden he marries her after hearing of his friend's death in northern France. Another child is born. Having served in Palestine, luckily surviving at Dunkerque and returning safely from North Africa he joins the 1st Airborne battalion whose mission was to take the bridge at Arnhem.
