The truth about immigration is in the hearts of the immigrants. It
is what happens when they are called and pushed to El Norte. Today
many new immigrants are Mixteco speakers. They immigrate seeking
better lives. They are leaving behind discrimination against their
language and their culture. The poems here share part of Natalia's
heart. The poetry contains her feelings about language, loss and
friendship. The prices she has paid and what she has gained come
through in her poems. Most of all, they share some of what it means
to raise children and make friends in the US while still loving
distant parents and her homeland of Oaxaca, Mexico. Here are
Natalia's original Spanish poems with their English translations.
