1896. One of the great English novelists, Meredith wrote complex,
often comic yet highly cerebral works that contain striking
psychological character studies. In Meredith's novel about a
troubled father-son relationship he has created a hero with whom it
is impossible for the reader to identify. The Ordeal of Richard
Feveral was a deliberate departure from the traditional conventions
of the Victorian novel which demanded a shared set of conservative
