I originally tried to read this book when it first came out, but 4 chapters in and I couldn't get into it so I put it on the backburner. Then with the release of the movie and generally good reviews, I wanted to try it again so that I can make my own mind up and see the movie. And all I can say is WOW! What a thrilling read. The differing views in each chapter of the 2 protagonists (or is it antagonists) make for interesting viewpoints and gives great insight into Nick and Amy Dunne and their complicated relationship.
With Amy going missing and Nick becoming the main suspect, the storyline really challenges your perspective on what to believe and once the second half of the book starts and the major twist kicks in, all plot developments ratchet up a couple notches and the story takes you down some dark and twisted paths. Once that second half began I couldn't put the book down, as the masterful unravelling of the plot questions everything that came before. The only drawback I had was the ending, but up until that point I loved the way Gillian Flynn set things up then broke down our assumptions.
Nick and Amy are 2 great characters, and reading their thought processes and inner monologues make for insightful reading, not just on a mystery thriller level, but even on the level of relationships and how we all approach them and justify our actions and reactions to situations. I'm still a tad disappointed in the ultimate resolution, but I'm willing to forgive it only because when I tried to think what kind of ending I would have chosen, I find I only end up resorting to oft-tried mystery cliches. Still a cracking yarn and I can't wait to see the movie, adapted by Flynn as well, so it should be interesting to see how she interprets the screen story. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, "New York Times" bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong.
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife's head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the
alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media--as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents--the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter--but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn't do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?
With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

Wow! What a book! Psycho, addictive and dark! Will add this to my top 10 list for sure. Twists and turns aplenty!
I have never seen the movie... so now I'm going to watch it and debate if the book or the movie was better. (The book is always better).
Gillian Flynn is fast becoming one of my all time favorite authors, I have already read "Sharp Objects" and "Dark Places" and they were both amazing and this book is right up there. I highly recommend all 3!
