Damages - Season 1 (DVD, Boxed set)

This nail-biting series starts off with a bang, as we witness a young woman step out of a building, covered in blood. She gets picked up by the police and sits in an interrogation cell. Then we flashback a few months, to see her joining a new law firm, headed by a twisted Patty Hewes, played with amazing viciousness by Glenn Close. And as the season progresses, we follow a huge civil case which culminates in what we saw at the beginning.

This highly original take on the legal system is suspenseful, and utterly absorbing. Each of the 13 episodes moves the story along as we work our way back to the present day, and the unravelling of the twisted plot is mesmerising. You won't be able to take your eyes off the screen for a single second.

The performances are rock-solid, especially that of the afore-mentioned Close, and also Ted Danson, playing against type as the defendant Arthur Frobischer. You never know how innocent or guilty he is, which is basically the same for all the characters. You never know who to trust, as our protagonist soon finds out. Just when you think you have the plot figured out, prepare to get the rug pulled out from under you. Highly addictive! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

As Patty battles Frobisher and his attorney, Ellen learns what it takes to win at all costs - and that lives, not just fortunes, are at stake.
