Often called “The
Ben-Hur of war films,” this gripping Alistair MacLean adventure story tells of two colossal artillery pieces that the Germans have installed on the island of Navarone in order to prevent Allied access to a vital shipping route in the Aegean Sea. An attack from the air is out of the question, so, a small commando group is sent to destroy the weapons. Led by Anthony Quayle, the team comprises crack mountaineer Gregory Peck; explosives expert David Niven; close combat specialist Stanley Baker; Greek colonel Anthony Quinn, and James Darren – who was born and grew up on Navarone. Once there, they link up with two women; Darren’s sister Irene Papas, and former Nazi victim Gia Scala, and must cross the island together in order to reach the guns.
Needless to say, there is a traitor in their midst!
Story, special effects, action and acting are all top-class, and special mention must be made of David Niven who was very ill at the time of filming, and played his role heroically with a temperature around the 40-degree mark!
In 1943 a group of mismatched Allied soldiers are sent to sabotage
two powerful Nazi guns situated on a Greek island. If their mission
fails, the guns will wipe out the 2,000 British soldiers who are
attempting to evacuate civilians further down the coast. The
mission is led by the dispassionate Captain Mallory (Gregory Peck),
whose clinical approach does not find favour with explosives expert
Corporal Miller (David Niven). Meanwhile, the group's Greek patriot
guide Andrea Stavros (Anthony Quinn) is nursing a grudge against
Mallory for an old injustice. A belated sequel, 'Force 10 from
Navarone', followed in 1978.
