Excerpt from book: CHAPTER H THE FRONT LINE OF BATTLE "Look " cried Ned, as the boys and the Genie sailed along high in the air. "Look at the glare below." "It's a fire," said Buster, "and a big one. . . . Oh, what was that? It sounded like a horrible laugh." "The Genie " whispered Joe, edging close. "He must have gone mad. Look at him. Oh, dear, I didn't expect to be so afraid of him." The Genie seemed changed to cutting flashes of red and black. His pointed feet and the curling flame of his cap seemed to lick into the air like wicked forked tongues, as he spun and leaped in a sort of wild dance that was as terrible as it was graceful. His crackling laugh rang out mockingly. Again the boys heard the shots of the battlefield, the booming guns, the terrific explosions, and the cries of the wounded and dying. Nearer and nearer they sounded. A sudden swoop of the magic capes, over which the boys seemed to have no control, piloted them into the thick of the fray Stinging shots burned their flesh like coals of fire. Deafening crashes were followed by showers of burning cinders which suffocated them. Clouds of fire rolled through the air, splitting the darkness and choking then- voices. For hours, it seemed, the boys were held fast in this terrible agony. When the din of battle finally died away a bit, seeming to shift its fiercest centers to other sectors, they could hear each other moaning and crying in pain. It was a long time before their parched throats could frame words withwhich to call a name or a message. Ned's voice was the first to reach the consciousness of the others. "It isn't fair," he was sobbing. "We hadn't a chance." Tom heard him. Ned was voicing his own tortured feelings. "We hadn't been trained for this," he answered, and indignation was mixed with his pain...
