Once again Herbie Brennan has come up with a slick, fast-paced tale
that has enough twists and turns to keep even the most restless
reader glued to the page. He has a keen eye for novelty, very
evident in the Fairy Nuff stories and hardly surprising from one of
the first writers to create adventure gamebooks. In this second
book in the series Fairy Nuff has been knighted for saving the
Queen from the aptly named Widow Buhiss. While she's incarcerated
in the Tower our hero finds a cash windfall in the forest and
employs dyslexic builder Murphy O'Toole to build his dream palace.
But unwittingly Murphy mixes gunpowder with the mortar, turning the
building into a time bomb that ticks away throughout the narrative
and adds tension to an already fast-moving plot. Brennan throws in
a love story between a termite named Albert and a stunning lady ant
who, despite being drunk when they meet, is able to recognize her
own Prince Charming. A herd of elephants and an enraged Widow
Buhiss explode into a tale that has the thrill and drama of a
pantomime. Brennan is as comfortable in the children's market as he
is in creating adult books, and Ross Collins's wickedly funny
illustrations speed the story on its way. This is a clever, bang
up-to-date fairy tale that should appeal to all young readers. Ages
8-10 (Kirkus UK)
Fairy Nuff has been rewarded with a knighthood for saving the kidnapped Queen. He has also become extremely rich through a windfall inheritance - what is left for him to do now but celebrate his good fortune by hosting a massive party.
