Allegations of Russian conspiracies meddling in the affairs of

emerged and gained currency in Russia and what role intellectuals

millennium, the image of the 'dangerous, conspiring West' provides
national unity and has helped legitimize Russia's rapid turn to
authoritarianism under Vladimir Putin.
