Selecting a leader is a momentous and defining choice for a political party. Leaders symbolize their party and are a primary factor in election outcomes. While we know much about the selection of national party leaders, we know less about the provincial selection process, particularly in the Maritimes. Conventional Choices breaks new ground by examining twenty-five different leadership elections, in three maritime provinces, involving all three leading political parties. This landmark study is based on surveys of participants in twenty-five Liberal, Conservative, and NDP leadership contests in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. This extraordinarily rich data spans thirty-two years, exploring the backgrounds, attitudes, and motivations of those who select party leaders. Conventional Choices adds to our understanding not only of leadership selection, but of Maritime and party politics more broadly.
