We get three stories here for the price of one! They take place in three different parts of the world over three different periods of time; their only link being the somewhat unusual car of the title.

In the first: in England, wealthy horseowner Lord Charles - the Marquess of Frinton (Rex Harrison) has just bought the car as a tenth wedding anniversary present for his French wife Eloise (Jeanne Moreau). His elation on his horse's having won the Ascott Gold Cup is shattered when he finds his wife with her lover and his underling, John Fane (Edmond Purdom) in the back of the Rolls with the shades drawn. For appearance's sake, Lord Frinton will not divorce his wife, but he returns the car.

The car later resurfaces in Genoa, Italy where it is bought, by gangster Paulo Maltese (George C Scott), who is touring Italy with his bored fiancee Mae Jenkins (Shirley MacLaine) and his right-hand man Joey Friedlander (Art Carney). Maltese suddenly has to return to Maimi "to take care of some business", and leaves Mae to be chaperoned by Joey. While Paulo is away, Mae finds herself falling in love with Stefano (handsome young street photographer Alain Delon) - a situation to which Joey turns a blind eye...

We next see the Rolls in 1941, in a repair shop in Trieste - on the Yougoslavian border. It is now owned by Gerda Millett (Ingrid Bergman) - a bossy wealthy American widow who is touring Europe. During the inevitable invasion of Yugoslavia by the Nazi Germans, patriot Davich (Omar Sharif) commandeers her automobile to sneak into the country. However, none of his men know how to drive, so Millett volunteers, much to Davich's surprise. They survive a German aerial attack and reach their destination. Along the way, these two very different people fall in love.

In the final scene, the car can be seen being unloaded from a cargo ship in New York. Was there going to be a sequel that was never made...?

The stellar cast alone makes the movie most enjoyable entertainment.
British comedy drama linking the lives and stories of three very different people through their ownership of the same yellow Rolls Royce Phantom II. The first to own the car is Englishman Lord Charles Frinton (Rex Harrison), who buys it as a birthday present for his wife Lady Eloise Frinton (Jeanne Moreau). The car is then bought by gangster Paolo Maltese (George C Scott) to tour round Italy with his moll Mae Jenkins (Shirley MacLaine). In the middle of their journey, however, Paolo is called back to the United States to take care of business. In his absence Mae takes up with street photographer Stefano (Alain Delon) whom she falls in love with. The final purchase is by Gerda Millett (Ingrid Bergman), a wealthy American widow on her way to visit royalty in Yugoslavia during its invasion by the Nazi Germans in World War II...
