1860. This work describes localities, and portrays personages and
events conspicuous in the struggles for religious liberty. The
design of this work is to exhibit, in a form as little repulsive as
the nature of the subject will allow, some of the phenomena of
religious intolerance, especially as it has been displayed in a
Protestant form, and to indicate the mistaken principle in which
these melancholy results have had their origin. Illustrated.
Contents: light of a dark age; writhings of the downtrodden;
contests with despotism; pioneers of liberty; aimings at the
impossible; crownless monarch; returning tide; price of religious
convictions; "Christ's crown and covenant"; appearing in true
colors; high church; will minus the power.
