Although subtitled "a novel about an Appalachian boyhood," these
are ten short stories strung together, eight of them reprints from
sources as diverse as the Saturday Evening Post and the Virginia
Quarterly Review, the most recent over 20 years old. All are
narrated by a boy whose family moves from place to place, eking out
a living in Depression-era Kentucky. They range from the broad
country humor of "Simon Brawl," about a mule who leads the boy
everywhere but straight on his first try at plowing - "I reckon we
made all the letters of the alphabet" - to the sadness of "The
Moving," when they leave their house in a boom-busted mining town
to a crowd of boys who "kept glancing at the windows, pockets
bulging with stones." There is vitality in characters like Uncle
Jolly, "forever traveling the road on a fool horse, hunting
mischief," or Pap, full of money-making schemes that never work
out. But both the heavily - sometimes needlessly - footnoted
dialect and the squashed-small type are off-putting. (Kirkus
Reviews)
When work ceases in the Kentucky coal mines during the Depression of 1929, a young boy and his family move to the mountains to live off the land.
