Jason Statham (sporting a head of hair for a change) stars with steely-eyed Ray Liotta in this intense mind-game psychological drama. Made back in 2007, the film was only recently made available for DVD release.
Jake Green (Statham) has just been released from jail, having spent seven years in solitary confinement in a cell between that of a confidence trickster, and one of a chess master. During this time, he has acquired – and perfected – a specific strategy (referred to as "the Formula"), that is supposed to lead its user to win every game he plays – irrespective of the game. Jake is now set on revenge on corrupt casino owner Dorothy Macha (Liotta) who set him up for his time spent in jail.
In keeping with much of director Guy Ritchie's other work: there is much mysticism; symbolism, and numerological references that I don't even pretend to understand. Apparently even the number of squares on the chessboard have a meaning! But Jason Statham fans can be assured of getting their full money's worth here. This is the first movie in which he has ever worked with Ray Liotta. Let's hope that it's not the last in which we'll see the two of them on opposite sides of the same crooked table!
