A good Western, in which Jeff Bridges takes over the role of Marshall "Rooster" Cogburn from John Wayne - who won his one and only Oscar in the original movie of the same name. For his role in this one, Bridges also managed to get nominated for the "Best actor of the year" at the Oscars. It was simply a case of the interpretation of the role for two different age-groups of the cinema audiences. The movie also received another nine other Oscar nominations in various categories.
Our narrator is pedantic Mattie Ross (Heilee Steinfeld, who speaks with perfectly-correct grammar) and whose father was murdered by one of his hired hands, Tom Chaney, (Josh Brolin) when she was 14. Chaney made off with her father's horse and his two California gold pieces. Now, having collected her father's body, Mattie is on the trail of her father's killer. Unbeknown to her, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is also in pursuit of Chaney.
To help her, Mattie chooses to hire Cogburn, as he is described as having "true grit." The gruff, one-eyed Cogburn repeatedly rebuffs her attempts to talk with him. She offers him $50, but he doesn't believe she has the money and refuses. She raises the money by aggressively horse-trading with Colonel Stonehill (Dakin Mattews), who did business with her father.
Yes, there is gunplay and violence aplenty, and while this remake lacks some of the humour of the original, it is still a credit to the genre - and is well worth seeing!
Coen Brothers updating of the classic 1969 western starring Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal 'Rooster' Cogburn, originally played by John Wayne.
After her father is murdered, 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) sets out to capture the killer, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin), with the help of two lawmen - the ageing, alcoholic marshall Rooster Cogburn (Bridges), and Texas Ranger La Boeuf (Matt Damon).
Determined to accompany them on their quest, Mattie wonders whether Cogburn, with his loose morals, has the required 'true grit' for the job. When Chaney's trail heads into Indian territory, Mattie, stubborn to the last, insists on joining the pair in their search, which soon finds them in a raft of dangerous adventures that will test them to the core.
