Marley & Me (DVD)

While not as funny as I was expecting it to be, this still managed to be a thoroughly entertaining film based on the bestselling novel by John Grogan, about a Labrador that entered the lives of him and his wife and played a major part in the shaping of their family.

Marley, the Labrador, of course causes numerous comic mishaps as he also happens to be a totally mischievous and infuriatingly disobedient dog. But as his owners soon find out, no matter how much trouble he causes, he also proves to be a loyal and loving dog. And this is the major strength of the story, one which shows how Marley progresses with the young couple through many moments of joy as well as heartbreak.

The performances from Wilson and Aniston are sufficiently grounded in realism as they experience the many ups and downs that all married couples go through, and whether it's scenes of affection or arguments, they're consistently well-acted. The performance of the canine star is a joy to behold as well, and one that will affect you emotionally at the inevitable conclusion. Delightfully entertaining. (4 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

John and Jenny were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy and their life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound steamroller of a Labrador retriever who crashed through screen doors, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, devoured couches and fine jewelry, and was expelled from obedience school.

Yet Marley's heart was pure, and he remained a steadfast model of love and devotion for a growing family through pregnancy, birth, heartbreak, and joy.
