We Own The Night (DVD)

An absorbing crime thriller in the vein of The Departed, this engrossing tale is set in Brooklyn, New York in the late 80's. Joaquin Phoenix plays Bobby Green, a nightclub owner who hangs out with drug dealers and other shady characters. Mark Wahlberg plays Joe Gruzinsky, a highly decorated cop who's put in charge of the city's anti-narcotics squad. These two are also brothers, and they're both aware that things are about to take a turn for the worse when it's clear a major player in the drug circles is operating out of Bobby's club.

Phoenix shines in this role, playing a generally decent guy who's made a few wrong turns in his life. You get the sense of his hesitation and fear of trying to help his brother and turn informant. Robert Duvall as the father brings the right amount of gravitas to the role of a man who, while proud of the one son is immensely disappointed in the career choices made by the other. And Eva Mendes as Bobby's girlfriend has never been hotter.

Quite a few twists and turns abound, and the authentic 80's feel mixed with intentioned pacing leads to a 'somewhat-satisfying' conclusion. 'Somewhat-satisfying', because it will depend on what you were looking for from the film in the first place. (3 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)

New York 1988, Bobby Green has changed his name to conceal his family connection to a long line of distinguished New York cops in order to pursue ambitions as a Brooklyn nightclub owner. As he turns a blind eye to the drug dealers around him, he comes face-to-face with the family he abandoned when his brother and father crack down on the club.

Now, Bobby must choose a side. Is he going to turn informant or will he help run the biggest crime ring in New York history?
