Jodie Foster is an accomplished actress who chooses movie roles wisely, and this is no exception. Instead of being a female version of
Death Wish with all action and no character development, this film focuses on the consequences of trying to overcome your fear after being attacked and how easy it is to lose your self-control once you've felt the power to be fearless.
Jodie Foster's character, Erica Bain, isn't just a one-dimensional vigilante, she's torn between what she feels is right (dispensing justice, albeit violently) and what she knows is illegal. Depending on whether you agree or not with Erica's actions, that's for you to decide. Once she befriends a detective who's on the trail of this vigilante, the story becomes even more interesting. Terrance Howard plays the detective, and after brilliant performances in Crash and Hustle And Flow, he finally gets the chance to shine alongside a true acting legend. And their chemistry and tension is amazing, pulling you in to their dilemma as you sympathise with both characters and their ever-expanding friendship, even though you know they are going to face-off against each other at some point.
Director Neil Jordan does a wonderful job of bringing New York City to life after dark, making it look scary and almost mystical. The pace of the movie is deliberate, so don't expect a gung-ho action film, this is slow-building suspense with a message to convey from a cast that wants you to listen.
