Burma, Afghanistan, Iran, Nepal, Sudan, Ghana... In 1977 I traveled
around the world to these and twenty-five other countries. My
budget was $35./day. Consequently, most of my journey was through
Third World countries where a room could be had for $3.00. Along
the way I was a guest of a student and his family in Iran, slept in
a yurt in Afghanistan, joined Nubian camel drivers on a relic of a
ship going up the Nile, crossed the Libyan desert in a sand blown
train, and avoided arrest in Ghana and Nigeria. In each of these
places and every place there were local people and fellow
adventurers who gave depth and uniqueness to the experience. As one
such adventurer repeated all too often: "travel broadens." Yes, it
does.
