This work, on its appearance, made an epoch in the treatment of
educational theory in Germany. Johann Karl Friedrich Rosenkranz was
born in 1805. In 1833 he became Professor of Philosophy at
Koningsberg, and occupied for forty-six years, until his death in
1879, the chair held for twenty-four years by the celebrated
Herbart, and for thirty-four years by the still more celebrated
Kant. He wrote extensive works on philosophy and literature, and
published the present work in 1848.
