One can always depend on Walt Disney studios for family-friendly movies... and in this comedy, they have teamed up John Travolta and Robin Williams. Charlie (Travolta) and Dan (Williams) are best friends. Both single; they are co-workers, and lifelong friends.
Actually, Dan has been married before; and, following the divorce, he becomes so depressed that Charlie feels obliged to take him on a wild vacation where he meets (and marries) a girl named Vicki (Kelly Preston). But the love affair is short-lived... and it's seven years before they meet again, and Vicki breaks the news to Dan that they have seven-year-old twins! When Vicky has to go to jail for two weeks due to an activist crime, Dan (aided by Charlie, with whom they have to board) has to look after the kids - and he has absolutely no idea of how to interrelate with them.
To detail the remainder of the plot would be far too complicated; suffice it to say that things do not go smoothly, and their activities together include a disastrous camping trip; as well as a birthday-party in the zoo - which includes a sneak entry through the gorilla's enclosure... and a subsequent attack by penguins!
Director Walt Becker has included a number of unique sight-gags... but these are mostly clever rather than screamingly funny. And (dare I say it?) of the twosome: Travolta appears here as being much funnier than Williams - who appears to be trying too hard.
To be fair: it is a reasonable comedy. But from a combination of Travolta, Williams, and Disney Studios: one feels one has the right to expect more!
Two best friends have their lives turned upside down when they're unexpectedly charged with the care of seven-year-old twins while on the verge of the biggest business deal of their lives.
The clueless bachelors stumble in their efforts to take care of the children, leading to one debacle after another, with a gorilla and some pecking penguins - and perhaps to a newfound understanding of what's really important in life.
