Rio Bravo

Positively one of the best Westerns ever made! In the small Texas town of <Rio Bravo “Dude” (Dean Martin) has become the local drunk. He was formerly the sheriff and a first-class gunman. He enters the saloon, begging for a drink – and the town's present sheriff John T Chance (John Wayne) has to rescue him from the bullying and humility dished out by badman Joe Burdette (Claude Akins,) who then guns down an unarmed bystander. Burdette is immediately arrested and slammed into jail. However, he cannot be tried for several days, as the US marshal will be out of town until then. So Burdett's brother Nathan (Joe Russell) and his men actively try get Joe out of prison. Chance decides that it would be best for him and his deputy, “Stumpy” (Walter Brennan) to remain holed up in the jailhouse in the event of further trouble. They are later joined by a young but lightningly fast gunman, “Colorado” Ryan (Ricky Nelson.) Meanwhile, a lady known only as “Feathers,” has arrived in town. She is the former girlfriend of Dude, and her leaving him apparently caused him to find solace in alcohol. “Feathers” then proves to the townspeople that she is a whiz at playing poker. Nathan Burdett's men capture Dude, and want to trade him for brother Joe...and this is where the action really starts! The movie also features two songs by Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson; while in a third, they are joined by Walter Brennan. They do not in any way intrude on the storyline. Just for the record: this picture was remade a few years later by the same director, Howard Hawks, and in which he used the identical plot in a slightly more humorous vein, as El Dorado which also starred John Wayne. However, the Dean Martin role was played by Robert Mitchum; “Feathers” was Angie Dickenson; James Caan appeared in the Ricky Nelson part, while “Stumpy” had a name change to “Mississippi,” and was portrayed by Arthur Hunicutt. You may judge for yourself which is the better picture! Believe me, it's a tough call.
