The Rite of Memphis aggravated members of "conventional" Freemasonry because it claimed not only to be the true source of Masonic wisdom but to be the ONLY legitimate Masonic system! Its rituals were much more esoteric than those commonly encountered in "regular" Freemasonry. Many colorful personalities allied themselves with this system, including Karl Kellner, Theodore Reuss and Aleister Crowley.
