Public Enemies (DVD)

Not to be confused with the 1931 James Cagney-Jean Harlow classic of a similar name; this is the true story of the life and times of notorious mobster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), and agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale), who gave his all in the interests of fighting crime during the depression era. Also featured - on the wrong side of the law - are Red Hamilton (Jason Clarke), Homer van Meter (Stephen Dorff); Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Pretty Boy Floyd (Channing Tatum), while on the good guys side, long-serving chief J Edgar Hoover (Billy Crudup) is striving to mould an efficient crime-fighting unit out of the then-fledgeling FBI.

The casting has been well done on a "facial likeness" level, but I personally found the Dillinger character to be projected here as a soft and almost comedic entity; at times even resembling Freddie Mercury! The necessarily violent action scenes are handled very well indeed though, and the atmsphere of a big American city in the 1930s has been flawlessly re-created. At times, however, the well-preserved cars of the era do tend to steal the limelight!

All in all, it is a thoughtfully crafted (and true) crime thriller that is worth sitting through: and if it isn't absolutely perfect, well... who/what is?

No one could stop John Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone - from his girlfriend Billie Frechette to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.

But while the adventures of Dillinger's gang thrilled many, the F.B.I. Director, J. Edgar Hoover, made Dillinger America's first "Public Enemy Number One".
