Jonathan Kellermans Alex Delaware thrillers have amassed a devoted
following, and the reasons for this are readily apparent. Delaware
(in such books as When the Bough Breaks and Over the Edge) has
utilized his background as a paediatric psychologist to create a
profession for his hero, a crack practitioner. In the first books,
Alex, though officially retired, took on special cases referred to
him, and a recurrent theme was that of damaged children, suffering
from emotional or physical abandonment by parents. That is (to some
degree) the theme of Flesh and Blood. When Alex Delaware first sees
Lauren, she is a teenager with all the usual problems moody,
uncommunicative, resentful of her parents. But years later, at a
bachelor party, Alex finds himself watching two strippers go
through a graphic display and one of them is the unhappy Lauren.
Then she disappears and were off into familiar Delaware thriller
territory, delivered with all the aplomb we expect from the
reliable Kellerman. In earlier books, Alex was occasionally
portrayed as being a little too prescient, but Kellerman has given
his hero a satisfyingly conflicted emotional life, and his personal
involvement here gives the story a strong underpinning of drama
that counterpoints the central mystery and sharpens it at every
point. Only Kellermans earlier Billy Straight displayed the same
degree of penetrating psychological insight and unvarnished view of
human nature here, the plotting is even more assured and trenchant.

For Alex Delaware, this crime is personal: if he couldn't help his
former patient in life, he will in death. FLESH AND BLOOD is a
fast-paced and complex thriller from New York Times No. 1
bestseller Jonathan Kellerman, and is perfect for fans of Harlan
Coben and David Baldacci. '[Kellerman] has shaped the psychological
mystery novel into an art form' Lost Angeles Times Book Review When
Alex Delaware first saw Lauren Teague she was a sullen teenager
with the usual problems: bad grades at school, moody,
uncommunicative with her parents - which is why they thought she
needed to see a psychologist. Then years later, a shock: at a
batchelor party for a fellow doctor, Delaware finds himself
uncomfortably watching two strippers going through a degrading
display - and one of them is Lauren Teague. And now her mother is
pleading for help once again: Lauren has disappeared - and she
thinks Delaware can find her. He's not so sure - but when her
disappearance turns into a murder investigation, he knows he owes
it to the dead girl to find out what demons drove her to such a
horrifying end . . .
