When this study was undertaken, women comprised some 20 percent
of the American labor force. Yet only one previous effort had been
made to determine the social characteristics and occupations of the
female work force. In terms of its comprehensive detail, this
pioneering statistical study has yet to be superseded, and it
provides valuable materials for labor historians and women's
studies scholars alike.
