The synopsis gives a good overall view of what this surprisingly funny comedy is all about…and believe it or not: there is actually a “Darwin Awards” website!
Fired from the San Francisco police force after his hemophobia lets a murderer get away, Michael Burrows (Joseph Finnes) drifts about in a deep depression for several weeks before coming up with a way to combine his obsession with the Darwin Awards with his talent for profiling. He proposes helping insurance companies detect people that are likely to accidentally end their own lives before they're sold insurance policies. After impressing a manager at the insurance company with his talent for profiling, he's paired up with Siri (Winona Ryder), a specialist in 'weird' insurance cases.
A twist of fate once again brings Michael into contact with the murderer he allowed to escape at the beginning of the film.
Named after the evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin, The Darwin Awards honour those who improve the human species... by accidentally removing themselves from it!
Michael Burrows (Joseph Fiennes) is a recently unemployed police personality profiler whose obsession with the Awards leads him toward a new avocation: creating a profile of these extreme risk takers. A preternaturally risk adverse person, he is paired with Siri Taylor (Winona Ryder), an insurance investigator who has been known to forget to buckle her seatbelt. Together they investigate the most famous of these urban legends, discovering their own destinies along the way.
The film is part inspired by several unbelievably true stories of utter buffoonery and features and all-star cast.
