“I didn’t know that the brick was bad!” are the tearful words spoken pleadingly to college student Brendan Frye (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) by his ex-girlfriend Emily (Emile de Raven) – two days before her dead body is found alongside a canal.
One of the many interesting aspects of this whodunit is that all the main characters are students. Brendan vengefully goes about investigating Emily’s death, and finds that he must first learn the identity and whereabouts of a drug baron known simply as “The Pin” (Lukas Haas). Gathering data mainly through his friend and fellow-loner “The Brain” (Matt O’Leary), Brendan is both helped and hindered by a variety of other colourful characters that include beautiful Laura (Nora Zehetner), jock Brad (Brian J White), wannabe actress Kara (Meagan Good), violent tough-guy Tug (Noah Fleiss), and the assistant vice-principal (Richard Roundtree).
Narrowly missing out on the Oscar stakes, this independently-produced picture won six of the eleven other movie awards for which it was nominated – including the Chicago Film Critics’ citation for “Most Promising Director” (Rian Johnson).
Off-beat drama from writer/director Rian Johnson, imitating the
conventions of 1940s hardboiled film noir as a teenager
investigates his ex-girlfriend's death in a small Southern
Californian town. Brendan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an outsider at
his high school, but when his ex-girlfriend Emily goes missing, he
decides to investigate. Teaming up with The Brain (Matt O'Leary),
Brendan gets close to Emily's group of eccentric and sinister
friends. As he begins to suspect the figure known only as The Pin
(Lukas Haas), Brendan insinuates himself into his inner circle. But
will Brendan uncover truths about Emily, or more dangerous truths
about himself?
