Political scientist Laidi grapples with the claim that the end of communism and the rise of globalized market capitalism have destroyed a rational way of thinking about the world that goes back to the Enlightenment. Today, he says, we live in a postmodern world in which meaning systems have ceased to exist. To the Marxist, however, this is a wilful mystification of the reality of capitalism, while to the ethnic nationalist it is a heaven-sent opportunity to preach the religion of national oppression. Professor Laidi believes that these are both misguided attempts to revert back to discredited old models of thought whose shelf-life, he says, will be even shorter in the future than it has been in the past. (Kirkus UK)
In this provocative and incisive book, Zaki Laidi argues that as our world becomes ever larger, our ability to find meaning in it diminishes. With the end of communism came the end of the intimate alliance between power and ideology. No power in our globalised world can any longer claim to provide meaning. In despair we look back to old models (religious traditions, nationalism, ethnicity) to give us a sense of identity. But in a globalised world in a permanent state of flux, just how effective are these old certainties?
