Taking place between the early 1930's to mid 1940's, The Great Hawk
is the compelling story of Jimmy; a young boy who dreams of
training a baby hawk for falconry. Speaking directly to young
adults through both Jimmy's age along with the naive earnestness
with which he approaches the task of training a baby hawk. A rural
setting during the Great Depression is ideal for this literal tale.
Starting with a picturesque description of the trip to Jimmy's
grandparent's farm the story entices the reader to continue further
to discover Jimmy's next stop in his journey. From the building of
his falconry perch all the way to the ominous consequences of
agreements, Jimmy's journey culminates with an ending that is both
haunting, and flavored with a hard-learned lesson. Vivid imagery,
and at times rather dark descriptions of Jimmy's experience is that
of the innocent exuberance of youth and the near tragic awakening
to consequences.
