Filmed in colour on a shoestring budget: after more than fifty years, Genevieve is still probably the most affectionately remembered of all British comedies ever made. Genevieve is a 1905 Darracq motor-car, being driven in the annual London to Brighton vintage car rally by Alan McKim (John Gregson) and his lovely wife Wendy (Dinah Sheridan). Their loudmouth friend, Ambrose Claverhouse (Kenneth More) is also taking part; driving a very much more powerful six-cylinder Spyker – and is accompanied by girlfriend-of-the-moment, Rosalind Peters (Kay Kendall).
Very much against the rules (and against the public safety!), Alan and Ambrose have a wager on the way back, as to which car will be the first to reach London Bridge…and from then on, the whole event suddenly becomes a desperate cutthroat race for them. The surprise happy ending, however, is something that once seen will never be forgotten.
Harmonica virtuoso Larry Adler earned his Oscar for both composing as well as playing the simple but catchy musical score for this one, while Kay Kendall – who died far too young at the age of only 32 – highlights what a marvellous comedienne she had already proven to be.
Every year, barrister Alan McKim (John Gregson) and wife Wendy
(Dinah Sheridan) compete against Alan's friend (and Wendy's former
beau), Ambrose Claverhouse (Kenneth More), in the London to
Brighton vintage car race. This time round, however, Alan's 1904
roadster, 'Genevieve', breaks down on route. Angered by Ambrose's
jokes at the expense of his beloved car, Alan bets his rival that
he can beat him on the return journey to London - and the race is
on! Larry Adler's harmonica score was nominated for an Oscar. Also
included is a 'making of' documentary.
