Cellular (DVD)

Half-expecting a call from his ex-girlfriend Chloe (Jessica Behl) with whom he has just broken up: Ryan (Chris Evans) receives a cellphone call from a complete stranger who identifies herself as Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger). Sounding nearly hysterical, she tells him that she has just been kidnapped; doesn't know where she is; and fears for the life of her young son - whom she has just taken to school - and her husband. Ryan, naturally enough, supposes this to be a bogus call. But she succeeds in convincing him that it is genuine - so he tries to go to the police. However, there is an old saying, "You can never find a policeman when you really need one"; and this is exactly what Ryan experiences!

Leader of the gang of Jessica's kidnappers is a man called Ethan (Jason Statham). He is trying to get hold of something believed to be in the hands of Craig Martin, Jessica's husband (Richard Burgi). Meanwhile at the police station, Ryan finally manages to get the attention of a bored desk sergeant, Bob Mooney (William H Macy), who rather reluctantly starts an investigation. Mooney, too, comes to realise that what is happening is happening for real. But the question is, are all of Mooney's men to be trusted...?

Jessica maintains contact with Ryan. Her initial call to him was a completely random one, as she had had her cellphone severely damaged when she was kidnapped, but by trial and error - by connecting a few wires together - managed to get a signal!

The story is a good, entertaining, suspenseful, and exciting one in which the pace never lags - even if certain happeningss are a little improbable. Acting right down the cast is good... and special mention must be made of Rick Hoffman, a tall fellow who plays a comedic role as a somewhat snooty lawyer - who has his prestige sports car hijacked... more than once!
