"Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa. Amazing Africa. ... But soon Anna Hibiscus is going to visit her granny in Canada. She is going to see snow!"
I went to bed smiling and content to be African after reading this gentle, poetic and warm book. I loved it. But I wasn't so sure my 5 year old would. I am delighted to say she really enjoyed it too - certainly the wonderful, characterful illustrations of Lauren Tobia on every page were a help. And what a wonderful way to introduce young children to some of the complexities of living in Africa - poverty, drought and of course race, without being at all preachy and with a dose of wry humour.
Suitable for reading aloud to young kids starting with chapter books or for kids getting more confident at reading on their own.
